WITHIN (Earth Turtle Music 2000) CD In the spring of 1998, Barbara Hand Clow commissioned Michael to write this music for use in her workshops. Once he completed Barbara's version, he rearranged the compositions and added material for this CD. The music encompasses nine dimensions of the Earth experience, stretching from the molten center, to life and sounds from the planet's surface, out to the distant galaxies. One of the pieces, Seven, was composed on a Serge synthesizer. This is the first piece done entirely on the Serge since Planetary Unfolding. The film documents magical rites of initiation for Micronesian navigators on the island of Lamotrek. On some of the music, Michael weaves in the songs and chants of the island. Growing up in the southwestern United States, Michael has been fascinated with the mysterious ruins of the ancient Native American cultures that came before. He was first introduced to Pueblo Bonito and Chaco in a lucid dream in 1977. Over the years he has spent much time in Chaco and developed a special relationship to the place. Both were deeply affected by reading Castaneda’s books about his encounters and apprenticeship with the Yaqui Indian sorcerer Don Juan Matus. These books open the reader to the non-ordinary reality that is an inextricable part of the Sorcerer’s world, and the music on this CD is aligned with and becomes a vehicle for that reality.
